The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
