The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
