Severe gusts reaching velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 homes without power and forced agencies to call off over 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

These gusts are impacting the entire southern region and lower areas of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have released infrequent red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been advised to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more electricity and network failures.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Measures

This outage is primarily influencing households predominantly in the southern region, while authorities report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was blown onto moving cars on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a incident that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services entering and leaving the city have been suspended because of the gusts, whereas some roads and libraries are also closed.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have issued a state of emergency, to support disaster response efforts.
