Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
