The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
